The Vegan Tree on South Street in Philadelphia

The Vegan Tree on South Street in Philadelphia

We stopped in for a quick lunch at the Vegan Tree, the go to spot for vegans on South Street. Perfect for a quick bite if down around South Street, this is a very tasty mostly Asian vegan spot. It has a small but welcoming interior to sit down for a fresh cooked meal and perhaps a fresh juice as well. The juices are made here from 100% good healthy ingredients which means none of the ice often added. That’s a tip off for the integrity of Vegan Tree and the food. We went for the lunch specials, which were under $10 and consisted of three items, one a beverage.

One combo was freshly made summer rolls, which were the best of it all, a noodle chow mein with white and green noodles and a bubble tea. Our other combo was “golden nuggets”, which were tasty triangles of a vegetarian chicken style meat with a spicy type of mayonnaise sauce (vegan of course), with a dark rice fried rice and a soda. Both the fried rice and chow mein had some flavorful bits of tofu in them, and some vegetables too. Vegan Tree is a simple straightforward type of vegan spot. It’s not breaking new culinary ground, but it is definitely an affordable flavorful option for all vegetarians and vegans in a busy location. With a lot of young people heading down to South Street on the weekends and during the summer, a joint like this is perfect for showing that vegan food is not that different. I’m sure for many this is one of the first experiences they may have with a fully vegan eatery.

The Rock and Roll Vegetarian thinks this easy to grasp Asian menu serves as perfect introduction. The food was plentiful, we both brought some home for dinner. We will be back!
