The Vegan Tree on South Street in Philadelphia

The Vegan Tree on South Street in Philadelphia

We stopped in for a quick lunch at the Vegan Tree, the go to spot for vegans on South Street. Perfect for a quick bite if down around South Street, this is a very tasty mostly Asian vegan spot. It has a small but welcoming interior to sit down for a fresh cooked meal and perhaps a fresh juice as well. The juices are made here from 100% good healthy ingredients which means none of the ice often added. That’s a tip off for the integrity of Vegan Tree and the food. We went for the lunch specials, which were under…

Chef Lenka Zivkovic's Vegan Tasting Menu at The Plough & The Stars

Chef Lenka Zivkovic’s Vegan Tasting Menu at The Plough & The Stars

One thing is very clear when talking with chef Lenka Zivkovic about her plant based menu at Philadelphia’s The Plough & Stars – there is a tremendous amount of passion and heart in her creations!    Her food is not only delicious and beautiful, but she also places a lot of focus on the healthful and pure. Vegan “Crab Cakes” at Charlie Was A Sinner.

The Rock and Roll Vegetarian headed out to Charlie Was a Sinner, the renownd Philadelphia vegan restaurant and bar, for some happy hour drinks and to try their “Maryland Style Crab Cakes”. Charlie Was a Sinner has created a dynamite little dish!  Two small slider sized cakes on a brioche roll, with a tangy remoulade and lettuce, and a side of potato chips.  Everything was super fresh – Charlie’s makes everything on the plate, including the bun and chips.   The chips had a slight hint of “Old Bay”, which we were told was actually a homemade salt blend.   The cakes…

Honshemeji and Maitake Mushrooms in Philly? Spring Garden Market

Honshemeji and Maitake Mushrooms in Philly? Spring Garden Market

Spring Garden Market may just solve all mushroom issues you have.  Like the problem that shitakes at the grocery are so expensive and old.  Like the problem that your recipe is calling for a mushroom you can’t find.  Like you are trying to make something that just smacks of asian restaurants… I’ve been using more and more mushrooms in my cooking since hitting Philadelphia this year. King Oyster mushrooms, also known as Royal Trumpet or French Horn mushrooms, have been a staple for a number of years, even finding a favorite brand, Hokto.  We used to hunt these big daddy…
